Here are some quick tips:

1. Set up your campfire before you start striking you steel. The teepee method works well.

2. Use dry tinder. Either something you pack with you, or find some dry grass, moss, wood shavings, etc.

3. Use the back of your knife so you don't damage your blade.

4. Hold your knife firmly in a stationary position near your tinder, pull the ferro rod across the knife to make sparks.
